Provided by AGP“A deal is expected to be signed in April to this effect,” stated State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. Rashiduzzaman Millat while addressing journalists after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman regarding the issue.
He further noted that authorities have chosen to reinstate direct air routes to Tokyo, Japan, beginning in June. These flights had previously been halted during the tenure of the last interim administration.
Millat also mentioned that talks are ongoing with the European aircraft producer Airbus, aiming to establish a diversified fleet in the coming years. He added that “initiatives have been taken to add new aircraft within two to three months, including through leasing to increase the fleet in the short term.”
Previously, the interim administration under Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus had taken steps to complete the aircraft acquisition from Boeing, overturning an earlier move by the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which had favored purchasing planes from Airbus.
The interim leadership intends to secure new Boeing aircraft to tackle the growing shortage within the national carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines. The total expenditure for this procurement is estimated at approximately 350 billion taka ($2.8 billion).
